Woodham Cottage

Broadstairs, Kent

Woodham Cottage is a substantial extension and remodelling project that was conceived alongside the neighbouring new-build dwelling, Chalk, as part of a coordinated architectural response to the site.

While the two projects were developed together, the focus at Woodham Cottage was to transform and expand the existing home through a contemporary intervention that strengthens its relationship with the garden and surrounding landscape.

The design redefines Woodham Cottage through the introduction of a carefully composed courtyard arrangement, creating a series of interconnected internal and external spaces that improve daylight, outlook and spatial quality. The extension is expressed through clear architectural forms and a restrained material palette of white painted brickwork, black brickwork and black timber cladding. These materials are used to articulate the new volumes and establish a strong yet complementary relationship with the existing house.

Large areas of glazing enhance the connection between the living spaces and the landscape, while a sedum roof helps soften the visual impact of the extension within its setting. Together, these interventions create a contemporary addition that is confident in its architectural expression whilst remaining sensitive to its context, giving Woodham Cottage a renewed identity and a strong connection to its environment.
