Cowshed & Lambshed

Lenham, Kent

Located in Lenham Heath, Kent, this pair of agriculturally inspired detached country homes reinterpret the familiar forms of rural farmsteads through a confident contemporary lens.

Conceived as simple pitched volumes arranged to echo traditional barns, the houses respond directly to their open countryside setting and the agricultural heritage of the site. Their bold yet restrained massing allows them to sit comfortably within the landscape, maintaining long views across surrounding fields while establishing a strong architectural identity rooted in place.

The material palette reinforces this dialogue between tradition and modernity. Dark vertical cladding and standing seam metal roofs reference utilitarian farm structures, while crisp detailing and carefully positioned openings introduce a refined domestic quality. Generous internal accommodation is organised with efficiency and clarity, ensuring that space is used intelligently without excess. The considered specification of locally sourced and sustainable materials not only strengthens the connection to the local context but also supports a cost-effective and environmentally conscious build.

Simplicity of form and precision in detailing enabled the homes to be delivered within an efficient 14-week construction programme, demonstrating how thoughtful design can streamline the build process without compromising architectural ambition. The project’s sensitive response to its rural context, combined with its contemporary expression and sustainable approach, was recognised with the Kent Design and Development Award 2019.
