Westgate One

Canterbury, Kent

On Architecture was involved in the early design and planning stages of the redevelopment of this prominent brownfield site, transforming the former Barretts Jaguar and Land Rover dealership into a major purpose-built student accommodation scheme within Canterbury’s historic city centre.

Located adjacent to the Grade I listed Westgate Towers, the development presented a unique opportunity to regenerate a long-established commercial site while creating a new residential destination that responds sensitively to its highly significant heritage setting.

The architecture draws upon Canterbury’s rich vernacular, reinterpreting traditional forms in a contemporary manner. A composition of steeply pitched rooflines, articulated gables, brick and tile-hung façades, and carefully proportioned fenestration creates a varied and distinctive streetscape, establishing a strong architectural presence while remaining sympathetic to the scale, character and rhythm of the surrounding townscape.

As the project progressed, On Architecture worked alongside OSG Architecture to support the evolution and delivery of the scheme. The completed development successfully combines contextual architecture with contemporary student living, creating a series of high-quality buildings arranged around landscaped courtyards that make a positive contribution to the city centre and its historic setting.
