Lockside Tonbridge

Tonbridge, Kent

Lockside Tonbridge transforms a prominent brownfield riverside site at Medway Wharf Road into a contemporary residential neighbourhood that reinforces the ongoing regeneration of the Town Lock area.
The proposal comprises 118 apartments within a carefully articulated 7–9 storey building, creating a strong urban frontage while enhancing key pedestrian connections between the River Medway, Town Lock and Tonbridge town centre.

The architectural concept draws inspiration from the industrial heritage of Medway Wharf, reinterpreting the character of historic warehouse buildings through a composition of stepped volumes, gabled roof forms and a robust brick-led material palette. The massing is deliberately broken into distinct elements to reduce visual impact, respond to the surrounding townscape and create a contemporary landmark that remains sensitive to nearby heritage assets, including views from Tonbridge Castle.

Designed to deliver high-quality homes in a highly sustainable location, the scheme prioritises residential amenity through generous internal layouts, private outdoor space and shared rooftop facilities. A comprehensive landscape and public realm strategy strengthens the relationship between the development and its waterside setting, improving connectivity, restoring pedestrian permeability and enhancing the public realm around Town Lock to support the long-term evolution of Medway Wharf.
