James Williams Healthy Living Centre

Chatham, Kent

The James Williams Healthy Living Centre has transformed approximately 40,000 sq. ft of former retail accommodation within the Pentagon Shopping Centre into a contemporary healthcare destination for the Medway community.

Located at the heart of Chatham, the £15 million development reimagines the existing first-floor space, creating a modern and accessible environment that brings together GP practices, community clinics, pharmacy provision and wider NHS services within a single integrated facility. The completed scheme establishes a significant civic asset, improving access to healthcare while contributing to the ongoing regeneration of the town centre.

Appointed at RIBA Stage 3, On Architecture completed the developed design and provided architectural services through Stages 4 and 5, supporting the project from design development through to construction. Our role focused on the progression of the design into a fully coordinated technical solution, integrating architectural, structural and building services information within the constraints of the existing building. Careful coordination of fire strategy, acoustic performance and healthcare-specific requirements ensured the delivery of a compliant, efficient and high-performing clinical environment.

Working within a BIM-led design process, we developed detailed Revit models and comprehensive construction information to support the successful delivery of the project on site. Our scope included general arrangement drawings, setting-out information and coordinated technical detailing across a range of architectural packages, ensuring clear and buildable solutions throughout. Through close collaboration with the contractor, consultant team, NHS stakeholders and Medway Council, the James Williams Healthy Living Centre has been successfully delivered as a modern healthcare facility that enhances both patient experience and community wellbeing.
