Responding to the Shoreline
Occupying a prominent beachfront site on Coast Drive, Greatstone, Beach Rise comprises four contemporary coastal homes designed in direct response to their exceptional seaside location. Positioned between the established frontage of Coast Drive and the expansive shingle beach beyond, the development reinforces the existing streetscape while creating a distinctive architectural presence along the shoreline. Arranged over three storeys, the homes are carefully orientated to maximise natural light, frame expansive sea views and strengthen the connection between everyday living and the surrounding coastal landscape.
Contemporary Coastal Architecture
Drawing inspiration from the character of the Kent coastline, the design reinterprets familiar coastal forms through a contemporary architectural language. Bold geometric volumes, carefully positioned openings and generous roof terraces respond to both the opportunities and challenges of the seafront setting. Elevated living spaces take advantage of panoramic views across the English Channel, while large areas of glazing establish a strong visual relationship between the interiors and the landscape beyond.
Materiality and Identity
The completed scheme is defined by a robust and carefully composed material palette suited to the exposed maritime environment. Textured brickwork forms a durable base, while standing seam metal cladding introduces colour, rhythm and visual interest to the upper volumes. Distinctive pastel tones provide individuality to each home, while a consistent approach to materials, proportions and detailing establishes a cohesive identity across the development.
Designed for Coastal Living
Internally, the homes have been organised around the experience of coastal living. Open-plan accommodation, generous storage and integrated covered parking support contemporary lifestyles, while expansive roof terraces extend the living environment outdoors. Framed views of the sea, ever-changing skies and surrounding landscape become an integral part of daily life, ensuring the architecture remains closely connected to its setting. The result is a distinctive collection of contemporary beach houses that combine contextual sensitivity, robust materiality and a strong sense of place on the Greatstone shoreline.
